Puerto Princesa in Film

I remember the day we booked our tickets for this trip as if it had just happened. It was a rainy December afternoon and I was stuck in traffic with Ralf. I was mindlessly scrolling through my emails when I came across PAL’s announcement for their annual holiday seat sale. I scrambled to sit upright on my seat. I clicked the link and checked our dates for our Palawan trip. Our roundtrip airfare only cost P1600 inclusive of taxes! I opened our Telegram group chat immediately and typed with the speed of light.

One by one, the personal details started pouring in. Prior to this, I had never booked a flight through PAL’s mobile website so it was a bit of a challenge since there were 5 tickets in total that I had to buy and not mess up any information. I read it again once, then twice, and one final time before I hit the PURCHASE button. A familiar email ringtone later and I had it: the tickets to our first high school barkada trip together (ever).

“I have sort of a Zen body philosophy, I’m sort of like: we’re one weight one day, we’re one weight another day, and some day our body just doesn’t even exist at all! It’s just a vessel I’ve been given to move through this life. I think about my body as a tool to do the stuff I need to do, but not the be all and end all of my existence.” – Lena Dunham

As a part of my 2016, I present my first swimsuit photo in 2 years and a new hashtag #loveyourbody. I’ve spent the past 18 months or so comparing my body to what it used to be and as an attempt to change that mindset once and for all, voila!

I’m not where I want to be at this point.

I’m still travelling, struggling, with the extra baggage

from the year before.

But everyday I am thankful

to be awake, alive, and going somewhere.

The journey is hard and the end is still at a distance

that I can’t touch no matter how hard I try to reach for it.

But everyday I am thankful

Even if the progress is minimal,

progress is still progress.

Patchwork and Nomadic Upholstery

Yesterday I got an email from a Styling assistant from a popular Fashion magazine (that I will reveal soon) here in the Philippines, asking me if I was up to making a look for an editorial. Naturally I said yes since I needed more content to build a kick-ass portfolio to show potential schools so that I can finally pursue my MBA. The editorial will be based on the Fall/Winter 2015-2016 trends of Patchwork and Nomadic upholstery. The catch: the shoot will be on August 7, so I have to submit the look on August 6; that’s 6 days from now! I die.

Once I got over the initial shock, I had a million things going through my head of all the elements I wanted to incorporate into my look. Good thing ___________ sent me some pegs from the actual Fall/Winter shows and I got to say, WOW. I especially loved Dsquared’s Eskimo inspired collection.

I was talking with Ralf about what to do with my look and we came up with the bright idea of having it Ewok and Eskimo inspired. So after scouring the mall for fabric, I gathered up my options and picked the ones that I would most likely be working with for this project. I got some really nice Missoni prints from Fanbi that I will definitely be using among other treasures. Getting excited over this because it’s something that’s totally different from the Origin of Love and frankly, I was getting tiresome of the neutrals.

That’s it for now! Stay tuned for the next update on this project. 🙂

Also, going to Preview Magazine’s launch party tonight! It’s for their August issue which I’m actually in (kind of)!!! I’ve been waiting for this to come out since May! I’ll definitely post the article once I get my hands on a copy.

Sandi’s 23rd

I’ll be honest, I am a very hard person to please. I think that the life lessons I’ve learned over the years have hardened me as a person. I know exactly what I like/dislike, what I am capable of and most especially, who I choose as my friends. Thankfully, the universe was kind to the angsty, pre-high school me by introducing Sandi into my already-hard life.

Sandi and I have literally been through thick and thin together (we met when I was still a chubby kid but who’s to say that that stage is over?). We graduated grade school, high school, moved to Manila and entered DLSU together. She’s been there for me since the first heartbreak and I’m glad to say that I’m still around for her first love. So many things have happened to us over the past 10 years that fitting them into one post simply isn’t possible.

Sandi was always one for helping others. Probably the most caring person I know, she’s dedicated her life to the betterment of the community. She’s a firm believer in her faith and has been a servant to the poor for as long as I can remember. She and her whole family are so inspiring because all of them share the same values. So when we met up for dinner the week before her birthday, I was not surprised at all that for her 23rd, she decided to plan a special Mural painting Out-reach program with U! Happy Events. The event was at Ospital ng Makati on the 25th of July (yesterday).

3 weeks prior to this though, I got a Facebook notification that her boyfriend, Ryan, had made a group with all her friends and family. His plan was to collect pictures and messages for everyone and compile them into a super surprise for her. He asked me to help him conceptualise how to present the collected dedications and I suggested that we make them into cards that double as fridge magnets. He gave it to her when we met up at the MRT, right before leaving for Ospital ng Makati.

Leave it to Sandi for making me come out of my comfort zone and meet new friends as well as reconnect with old ones. I got to spend the morning with Mike and Dianne, her block mates from DLSU that I used to be close to. I was smiling and laughing the whole morning with everyone else. All the good energy definitely uplifted the whole hospital because parents and other children from different rooms were coming to take a peek at the activity.

These pictures were taken by Mike (check out his work here!)  and I just post-processed them for my Twitter account. Still contemplating if I should grab the rest of his pictures and make a full blog post of the day’s events.

Happy happy birthday to my bestest friend! Words can’t describe how much love I have for you. Your light inspires me to shine brighter each and every day.

Mid-Year Rut

000009So I felt that it was time for me to post something that wasn’t photography related. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve felt that I’m in a rut.

Maybe rut is not the right term… But these days I haven’t been feeling quite like myself. I know that a big factor is because I don’t exercise anymore and I keep telling myself that I will get to it soon but soon isn’t soon enough. I can’t decide what form of exercise to choose. Of course yoga is first in mind but then I think “Hey, maybe I should do something that I can put down in my acting resume like Basic Ballet or Jazz.” Then that leads me to “Do I really want to do acting though? Or should I pursue fashion? Or should I take Toby’s advise and start applying for scholarships?”

I know that this is a symptom of being young though I can’t help thinking that I’m a late bloomer. At 23, many of my peers (and many so much younger than I am) are already doing amazing things. I keep telling myself to stop comparing because my journey has a different timeline. It’s been a struggle to bear it in mind though. Lately all I think about are the things I don’t have, the opportunities that weren’t given to me (or the ones I let pass) or what could be in store for the future. Sometimes I can’t help but wish that the answer to all these questions were in a manual that would magically fall from the sky for me to merely read and follow. But life doesn’t work that way and this rut will eventually run its course and pass. Until then though, I’ll try to keep myself from thinking about these things too much.

Happy 4th of July!

And since today (or since I’m in Manila, yesterday) calls for a celebration, I felt that it was the right time to post my fireworks photos! Taken with my trusty Zenit 122 of course (FILM FOREVER!).

And since this was taken using film, I had very low expectations for how this particular roll would come out. I was experimenting with smoke, fireworks and night photography; all of which I was basically a noob in. But lucky for me, it paid to be adventurous. With fireworks, it’s all about timing.
000035000036Hope you enjoy your day, guys!
